Wondering when is the best time to visit Varanasi? While the city is magical year-round, October to March offers the most comfortable weather. Here is a month-by-month breakdown with key festivals, weather and travel tips.
When to Visit Varanasi — A Month-by-Month Guide
October to December — Peak Season (Highly Recommended)
The weather is at its most pleasant — cool mornings, comfortable afternoons. This is festival season: Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali and most importantly, Dev Deepawali (Kartik Purnima in November). On this night, over a million oil lamps illuminate all 88 ghats simultaneously — a sight that is widely considered one of the most breathtaking in all of India.
January to February — Cool & Spiritual
Crisp winter mornings on the ghats carry a different kind of magic. Fog, cold air and the warmth of chai create a uniquely atmospheric experience. Maha Shivratri (February–March) sees lakhs of devotees at Kashi Vishwanath — the temple remains open through the night and the entire city thrums with devotion.
March to May — Summer (Off-Peak)
Temperatures climb to 40–45°C. While the heat can be intense, early morning (5–9 AM) and evening visits are still very manageable. Hotels offer significant discounts during this period, making it a good option for budget travellers.
June to September — Monsoon
The Ganges swells dramatically during monsoon, flooding some of the lower ghats. However, Sawan (July–August) is a particularly sacred month for Shiva devotees. The Kanwar Yatra brings thousands of pilgrims carrying holy Ganges water to Shiva temples across the region — a colourful and energetic spectacle.
Key Festivals in Varanasi
- Dev Deepawali (November): Over 1 million diyas on 88 ghats — the world's largest lamp festival

Trip Planning Tips
- Allow at least 3–4 full days to experience Varanasi properly
- Book hotels well in advance during festival seasons — accommodation fills up months ahead
- Keep your Ganga Aarti evening completely free — do not schedule any other activities
- Carry cash — most ghat vendors and small shops do not accept cards
- Wear comfortable walking shoes — the ghats and lanes require a lot of walking
